Buyer Guide Before Selecting a Camping Chair

Buyer Guide Before Selecting a Camping Chair

When you tell someone you have a camping chair for your weekend adventure, most of us envision a heavy folding chair that is so comfortable to sit on and can be put into a carrying case and slung over your shoulder for carrying.

But that’s just scratching the surface of what a camping chair can be! In reality, you no longer have to give up convenience or comfort to spend the weekend lounging at camp or on the beach.

Like you, we are delighted that there are new options for lounging outdoors. But how many options are there! It is almost overwhelming how many types and styles (and prices) of camping chairs there are on the market today.

You can pick up camping chairs not just at an outdoor store, but at a grocery store, a general shopping mall, and even a gas station.

However, as you may have guessed, not all chairs are the same. Fortunately for you, we have done the groundwork to match the chair that best suits your needs.

We have researched and tested many chairs, not one, not two, but several times over several years and hundreds of hours of rest to bring you the best chairs.

We use these chairs for camping, hanging out on the beach, cheering for our favorite sports teams, enjoying backyard barbecues, and busy game and movie nights.

We test these chairs to the max and rate them for comfort (obviously), portability, ease of assembly, and durability.

This article is meant to guide you through the surprisingly challenging process of choosing the right camping chair for your needs. If this is what you are looking for, keep reading!

Types of camping chairs

We tested a couple of types of chairs, as well as some for specific purposes. Mainly, although the chairs we tested can be divided into more traditional camping chairs, packable models, and specialty chairs.

For the most part, traditional chairs were a bit higher off the ground and weighed more, while packable chairs tended to be a bit smaller, a bit lighter, and required a bit more setup.

Specialty chairs are somewhere in the middle and are made with more specific lounging styles in mind. If you are looking for a camping chair with more space, easy to install, you are probably looking for a traditional camping chair.

In case you are looking to take a chair a few meters from the beach, and take it to all the summer meetings of your friends.

We found that traditional camping chairs are slightly more comfortable and less portable. Most of them have higher seats, which makes it easier to sit and stand, which is great if you have knee pain, are tall, or are just generally not interested in sitting less than a foot from the top.

I usually. These models also tend to be larger, giving you more room to move around and find various comfortable positions.

These chairs are also easier to install, most are required by simply separating two sides to extend the frame, and voila! However, these chairs tend not to be particularly portable as they easily weigh more than 5kg.

This isn’t too difficult to handle if you just pull it out of the back of your truck or cross a parking lot, but if you’re heading half a kilometer from the beach, this amount of weight will feel more noticeable with each step.

Packable models in most cases are relatively small and lightweight. As these products break down more than traditional models, they also require more time and effort to put back together.

The fabric comes off the posts, and the posts are divided into smaller segments to fit in an included carrying case.

We also tested some specialty chairs, some of which cross the boundaries in packable or more traditional style chairs. The ALPS Rendezvous folds up and feels like a traditional chair, but rests just 8 cm off the ground!

The Nemo Stargaze Recliner Luxury packs up like a folding chair but rocks like a hammock and reclines so you can watch the meteor shower.

The GCI Freestyle Rocker has a simple folding mechanism and an overall size and shape like a traditional camp chair, but features spring-loaded shock absorbers that allow you to rock just like you would on your grandfather’s old chair, but out in just about anywhere ground surface.

Typical uses for camping chairs

To help guide your purchase, we first recommend considering how you might use your camp chair. We have listed several typical usage scenarios below.

Car seats and food

These activities demand a lot of comforts. Usually camping in a car and following kids doesn’t involve a lot of walking, so size and weight aren’t a big deal.

Superior value and durability are always preferred, but let’s face it: After a long day of hiking or climbing, you don’t want to collapse with a chair that was the best deal, you want to sit in the model that is most comfortable.

The ALPS Mountaineering King Kong, our winning pick, is expensive and bulky, but it was so cozy the testers would fight for it after a long day in the mountains.

Almost as comfortable and accommodating 2 people is the Kelty Low Loveseat, which contained the occupants almost every time we turned.

The Kijaro Dual Lock Folding Chair is another super popular lounging chair, but it offers a bit more back support than the King Kong.

It doesn’t have a very “baggy” feel, and many testers preferred the tightness of its seat. The GCI Freestyle Rocker provides similar support but with the added thrill of rocking to sleep outside.

Another good candidate if you frequently camp or the tailgate is the REI Camp X . This affordable model is one of the smallest and lightest traditional models we tested and takes up less space in the back of your truck with all your other pre-game supplies.

It also has a well-ventilated fabric and a creative cup holder that can hold drinks of many sizes.

Chair for the beach

Bringing a camping chair to the beach is an excellent option, since you can read, sunbathe and rest all day (without having sand or straining your neck to read).

For beach use, we recommend looking for a mesh chair and trying to choose a lighter color that doesn’t get too hot in the sun. The mesh will keep you well ventilated while you sunbathe.

It is also important to buy a chair with a wide base or wide feet, planning ahead to find ways to prevent your chair from sinking into the sand while resting.

We found that some models without these wide feet can easily be fitted with discs or other add-ons to prevent sagging.

An excellent option for a day at the beach is the ALPS Mountaineering Encounter. At just over half the weight of many traditional camping chairs, this low-to-the-ground chair is a very comfortable and spacious option for beach days.

The Nemo Stargaze recliner chair is an all-mesh chair that is quite breathable, although its seams weren’t our favorites, especially in a bathing suit.

We love the Helinox beach chair for spending a day on the sand. Close to the ground, like the Rendezvous, the beach chair kept us very comfortable while on the sand and supported our heads as we enjoyed watching the waves.

Your storage sack can also easily be turned into a very stylish little pillow if you feel the need to fall asleep.

Big Agnes even sells a mesh version, if your chosen beach is unusually hot or you anticipate a lot of sand being thrown your way.

With well-designed feet to prevent sag, and low weight and size, this chair easily became our new favorite accessory for the beach day.

Chairs for your backyard

For your backyard, patio, porch, balcony, or whatever outdoor space you have is a space that most of us cultivate to look like a fun or relaxing space to enjoy the outdoors from the comfort of our homes.

While you may choose to put patio furniture, a hammock, or even your old sofa outside, a great camp chair can be the solution, too.

This is where many of those specialized models come into play. Do you want to be comfortable like in a rocking chair? Try the GCI Freestyle Rocker while bird-watching at the feeder.

Do you want to look at the night sky and see if we are alone in the universe? The Nemo Stargaze Deluxe Recliner Chair will put you in the perfect position.

Invite some friends to roast marshmallows over the campfire? The Kelty Low Loveseat can keep you cozy next door while creating memories to last a lifetime.

Additional considerations

Now that you have considered what activities you would like to use a camping chair, start thinking about how those uses can translate to specific needs. For example, do you have children?

Well, maybe being able to store your belongings within easy reach is an essential feature for you. From snacks to sunscreen, you need quick and easy access to a variety of necessary items.

The REI Camp X is a chair with great value and good portability that is not only quite easy to transport, but you can also store your essentials in an additional pocket.

If you live in a rainy climate or plan to use a chair for water activities, be sure to check out the models that dry the fastest.

We like the full mesh version of the Helinox beach chair and the Nemo Stargaze recliner for these situations. For particularly tall or older buyers, you might consider some of the models with higher seat heights.

They are significantly easier to get in and out of and will make you more likely to want to use the chair. The King Kong, Kijaro Dual Lock, and GCI Freestyle Rocker have higher, more ergonomic seat heights.

Special features

The final decision you need to make when purchasing a camping chair is whether or not you want additional bells and whistles with your chair. Several of the chairs we tested have additional features, from as simple as a small pocket or adjustable headrest to as complicated as cup holders, multiple laptop storage compartments, and padded armrests.

In general, packable models tend to have fewer features, but we still found some that can hold a phone, book, or drink close by or cradle our heads with a nice headrest.

Traditional models more often have additional features including insulated cup holders, high support backs, and oversized storage compartments with additional pockets to stay organized. Yes folks, camping chairs these days can do a lot of things!

1. GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker Portable Folding Rocking Chair

GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker Portable Folding Rocking Chair
GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker Portable Folding Rocking Chair - Price checking button

Camping rocking chair made for outdoor walks! Easy to transport and install, swings smoothly on any surface and anywhere. Reliable rocker at a reasonable price.

Our verdict

The GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker is a surprisingly good rocking chair that can be used on just about any surface.

Its wide, supportive design and high seat make it the perfect choice for almost any body type. While it does not fold well and is not our first choice for seating, this chair is a hit with our testers who love good rocking chairs or who love to fidget.

Our analysis and test results

The Freestyle Rocker is a wide, supportive chair with spring-loaded shock absorbers, powder-coated steel frame, and polyester ripstop fabric, rated for loads up to 250 lbs. It has one-step set-up and take-off, and a carry handles to take this 12.2-pound chair with you.

Comfort

GCI Rocker is a fairly simple design, comfortable and wide. The fabric may be tough according to some people, but it holds up well for people of different heights.

The mesh back provides breathability and the 14.2 ” seat height makes it easy to get in and out of this chair. Although there is no headrest, the back is high and straight enough that we never feel like we are stretching our neck too far to stay involved in a conversation.

The GCI armrests are a bit narrow in our opinion, but they are soft and work fine. The sprung shock absorbers provide a smooth and easy swinging motion that can be enjoyed on virtually any open surface.

If your favorite living room chair is a wooden rocker, we think you will love it. GCI has done an excellent job of keeping the rocker virtues of the outdoor ready-to-use product.

Portability

The Freestyle Rocker doesn’t compress much for storage. Even smaller than your regular sports chair, the Freestyle folds down the middle, bringing the right and left sides together, while maintaining the same height and depth as when installed. And given that this is one of the heaviest seats we’ve tested at 12.2 pounds, you probably won’t want to carry this seat a mile from your car if you can.

It features a carrying handle on the frame, eliminating the need for an extra storage bag or an awkward grip. We didn’t mind taking this seat with us in the car and to events with close enough parking, but this is not our first choice for long-distance transportation.

Durability

GCI Freestyle has a quoted load capacity of 250 lbs, which is roughly the minimum for most of the camping chairs we tested. The powder-coated steel frame and ripstop polyester fabric feels quite sturdy and withstands our impact and rebound tests.

Our 220lb tester found no problem with hard bumps in freestyle or bouncing on the seat. The spring-loaded shocks got a little stiff during our testing, but they need to be lubricated periodically. As soon as we did that, they returned to their smooth, quiet movements.

We’re not sure about the longevity of the cup holder under heavy use as it seems to be rather awkwardly attached to the front of the frame with metal rivets. But during testing, we had no real problems with it.

However, after leaving this chair all summer in the scorching sun of the high desert, it became incredibly damaged and worn out, practically not even used. Its fabric and seams literally started to fall apart just sitting in the sun – not the best quality for outdoor furniture.

In all fairness, it happened in bright sunlight at 5,000 feet above sea level. Unless you plan on leaving your chair on your patio all summer, this problem can most likely be avoided.

Ease of installation

Freestyle has one of the simplest mechanisms to put any chair on and off. By simply pushing the sides apart, this seat will be ready to swing, and with a handle on one side, you lift the seat up and fold it to the side to move to the next seat.

The sturdy steel frame retains its shape and the fabric handle on the back allows the Rocker to be carried like a suitcase wherever you go.

Functions

The fact that this outdoor chair can swing smoothly on almost any surface isn’t enough for you? Well, it also includes a cup holder on the front of the frame. This remote location will help you avoid spilling your drink by gesturing and telling a story.

However, this is a rather large cup holder without much support, so narrow bottles can be a little uncomfortable to sit. However, we think it’s better than not having a cup holder and leaving drinks on the ground.

Value

GCI Freestyle Rocker brings a lot of new things. We think this easy-to-use pedestal rocking chair is well worth the investment if you like it. And as long as you don’t let it sit in direct sunlight for a few months so that it is quickly destroyed by ultraviolet light, we still think this chair is worth it.

Conclusion

We were skeptical about the authenticity and comfort of an outdoor rocking chair, but the GCI Outdoors Freestyle Rocker came as a welcome surprise. Sure, this is kind of a gimmick, but we can’t deny that we enjoyed sitting in it.

The rocking mechanisms require a little oil from time to time and shouldn’t be left for months in direct sunlight, but we’re very impressed with the ride this chair provides.

We think this rocking chair is a good combination of comfort, convenience, and simplicity – all at a fairly reasonable price!

The GCI Outdoor Pod Rocker foldable rocking chair is arguably the most comfortable chair we’ve tested.

As the largest and most comfortable rocking chair offered by GCI, you can undoubtedly use it all year round.

However, this portable chair is not only designed for the beach, but also for camping and tail riding.

You can also bring this chair if you want to watch sporting events, music events, go on a picnic with your family, or just want to swing on your porch while enjoying your favorite book.

You can take it anywhere! With the GCI Outdoor Pod Rocker, you can experience the comfort of an intuitive, foldable, and compact rocking chair.

If you’re wondering why this chair is called a pod, because, like peas in a pod, it adjusts to your body while providing the comfort and support you need.

To find out more about this amazing chair, keep reading below and we’ll tell you what it is.

Key feature

Design and materials

The GCI Outdoor Pod Rocker foldable rocking chair can be compared to a high-end mountain bike with a hydraulic system. The only thing is, the hydraulic system of this chair allows the user to swing back and forth on the sand without drowning or experiencing any difficulty

Like other GCI rocking chairs, the Outdoor Pod Rocker is constructed using GCI’s patented Spring Rocker technology on the back of the chair.

This technology is responsible for the very smooth and luxurious rocking of the chair.

The Pod Rocker uses a sling seat made of breathable mesh panels to keep you cool and fresh. The fabric is made from 600 D ripstop canvas and is essentially as high-end as a sling can get.

While there is no hard armrest here, the way your arms adjust to the nice side stitching and soft material is amazing.

Each side is designed to work just like an armrest, so you don’t have to worry about how your arms are positioned.

The unique design of this chair is the front legs. That said, as you lean forward, these legs will help you sit firmly on the ground, which means that the rocking will stop.

This works best when you want to sit up and get out of your chair. As we all know, the traditional wooden rocking chair is very difficult to get in and out of.

But with the Pod Rocker chair, all you have to do is tilt it forward and your feet will almost be on the surface, which seems like it really helps you get in and out of the chair.

If you want to come back in a swinging motion, just move back and forth and you will have the same hold as in a hammock.

Comfort

Overall, the rocking is really relaxing and we have no doubt about it. The best thing about a chair like this is that you can comfortably enjoy the beautiful view of the street.

In this chair, you can snuggle together with your arms wide apart on the beautifully stitched side and soft fabric. The slingshot chair construction is an excellent design choice as it closely follows the shape of the body.

Thanks to the spring technology, the rocking becomes so good that it helps relieve stress and fatigue. In fact, a rocking chair can be a little exercise because you are actually moving well and at the same time in a calming manner.

Functionality

In fact, the first thing you’ll love about this chair is how wide and comfortable it will sit on. Honestly, it’s cozy enough to just slouch and take an easy nap.

We’re glad GCI decided to add two pockets on one side of the chair that you don’t usually see on other camping chairs.

One pocket is for your drink, which holds a 26 oz glass, and the other pocket is for storing any size phone or other small items that you want to easily access.

Setting up this chair is really easy, you can do it in just a few seconds. Unlike other camping chairs, the GCI Pod Rocker doesn’t have any single-pole design that you need to connect and secure or any slings that you need to insert into the chair frame.

All you have to do is unfold and unfold it and you can enjoy sitting.

Portability

The Outdoor Pod Rocker weighs in at 11.7 pounds, which means it’s not at all for backpackers.

For long journeys, you should have a car so you can just toss it inside for transport and carry it afterwards when it’s time to go camping.

You can easily carry it around the campsite with a handy bag with a convenient strap. Folding this chair is easy, just fold it in the middle and tighten it a little to flatten it.

After that, you can put it back in the individual carrying bag. When unfolded, the chair is 28.2 x 30 x 34.7 inches, which is really big, and when folded, it gives you 6.5 x 5.5 x 40.2 inches, which is really compact.

Durability

This foldable rocking chair can hold 300 pounds and can swing on almost any surface. From sand to stone, grass to wet surfaces – name it and you won’t have a problem.

GCI has made sure the frame is strong and safe. For this, the steel frame was powder coated.

You won’t have to worry about rolling over or falling to the ground. Another great feature of its unique design is that it does not damage the surface it is on.

So besides outdoor use, you can also use this chair indoors, ensuring that your floor tiles and carpet are not damaged.

Product Benefits

GCI’s patented Spring Action technology is what makes the Pod Rocker unique. This gives you the feeling of a suspension allowing you to relax smoothly.

Made from 600 D ripstop fabric – a premium material you can rely on when it comes to the breathability and soft touch of the sling fabric.

The powder-coated steel frame means this chair will last for years. It increases the strength of the chair and makes the steel frame resistant to corrosion and cracks.

This compact and portable rocking chair is different in how easy it folds and folds when you use it.

Structured belt seat and textured fabric that doubles as a comfortable armrest. This special shape of the chair makes you sit on it all day while enjoying nature.

Comes with a handy carry bag with a convenient strap that can be draped over your shoulders when you go camping.

A sturdy chair capable of supporting 300 pounds without breaking. To make sure it works, GCI even tried testing it with 450 pounds and thankfully it didn’t break.

Equipped with two pockets, a drink holder and an elegant pocket for your phone or other small valuables. These additional features don’t add bulk to the chair, which is really great.

Price, GCI Outdoor Pod Rocker is worth the price. Considering its uniqueness, proven comfort and functionality, you are sure to invest your money in a good portable chair.

GCI has brought a whole new level of coldness to camping with their rocker-style camping chairs. Their new one, the GCI FirePit Rocker, might be possible my favorite.

It is positioned lower to the ground than other models, so it is easier to swing if you are not very tall (like me). The spring-loaded rocking chairs are great at recreating that old rocker on your grandma’s porch, but this one folds!

It’s easy to throw in a car and weighs just 11.9 pounds. There is, of course, a drink holder for your favorite foam and a carry handle that makes it easy to carry. The maximum weight is 250 pounds and the powder-coated steel frame means you get years off of it.

One of my favorite features is just designed by itself. When you open it, you hear a nice pop, and this creates tension, so the seat remains firm. It’s a clever design. The mesh back will come in handy on hot summer days when you are in cooling mode.

The GCI FirePit Rocker comes with a limited lifetime warranty, and for a foldable portable rocking chair, the price tag isn’t bad either. The only thing they don’t tell you is how to keep your friends from doing it.

This is why it can be placed third in the row of Best GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker Mesh Chair

Pros

  • Great rocking design.
  • Very stable.
  • Great armrest.
  • Very easy to use.
  • Carry handle.
  • Suitable for any surface.

  • No stuff sack.

  • Not so great back support.
  • No locking mechanism for the rocker.

My Pod Rocker Pro was one of two foldable rockers I ordered from GCI Outdoor. I really wanted a chair to sit back and relax in and expected the Pod Rocker Pro to fit this ticket.

The lack of hard armrests and the oval shape of the chair really liked me, and I thought that the green fabric would show the least amount of dirt in the forest.

I got the Pod Rocker Pro due to its higher weight limit and slightly larger size compared to the Pod Rocker; my hashtag is not in vain #fatgirlhiking!

This is the first time I installed the Pod Rocker Pro in my living room and was surprised it was a little more difficult than opening a standard folding camping chair.

I finally looked at the tag attached to the chair because at first, it seemed like it didn’t want to open. Since then I have folded and unfolded it several times and it is very simple.

The design of the folded legs makes the chair not quite straight when you try to put it back in the bag, and I found it easier to put the chair on the ground, insert the legs first and then slide it.

bag over the rest of the chair. Moving it around is no problem either, as the chair only weighs about 12 pounds.

But sit! Sitting in the Pod Rocker Pro is like lying in a hammock. The phone and drink holders were a welcome addition and held containers of the same size that would roughly fit into a car’s cup holder.

The most successful tests I tested were a stainless steel hot pot (no mug handle), a soda can, and a 16 oz water bottle. The only beverage stand we tested that didn’t get the cut was a tall (11-inch) reusable water bottle that was too heavy.

The sides of the chair held me tight and were very comfortable, but since I’m only 160cm tall, the edge of the seat pressed up on the back of my thighs just above my knees. This made any rocking attempts uncomfortable and a little uncomfortable.

My partner took a six-foot sip of water and immediately stated that the Pod Rocker Pro is now HIS chair. He didn’t have the same problem with pressure on the back of his thighs and happily spent the entire evening.

We brought it in for camping and it didn’t take up more space than our old standard chairs. In the woods, we find that the wider base of the chair touching the ground did not sink into the mud on our last rainy adventure.

The dirt and grime that did come in contact with the chair were brushed off and were not supposed to be very noticeable.

Overall, I highly recommend this chair to those taller (over 5’6 ”). If I didn’t already have a second rocker, I would definitely buy myself a standard Pod Rocker.

This is why it can be placed Fourth in the row of Best GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker Mesh Chair

GCI KickBack Rocker Chair - Price checking button

Takeaway: A recent addition to the GCI Rocker lineup, the Kickback provides comfort and support (with accompanying weight) in a $ 50 chair suitable for camping, flip-up doors, and sporting events.

  • Pistons on the rear legs allow the chair to recline.
  • Cup holder and pocket keep your essentials close at hand.
  • Add padding and a footrest and you have a La-Z-Boy out of camping chairs.

I’ve been a fan of GCI’s Rocker range of camping chairs ever since I first tried out the FirePit a few years ago. I took him on hikes with colleagues, where he elicited friendly and envious teasing like, “Of course the outfit editor has a rocking chair.” And more than once, when I got up to get fresh seltzer water or beer from the refrigerator, someone sneaked up to pick them up at the moment when I was not there.

What allows Rocker seats, including this Kickback, which has since supplanted the FirePit as my favorite and deserved editorial choice, to recline back is the pistons on the rear legs.

They contain springs and allow you to swing back with significant resistance. I never felt like I was going to fall backwards in a kickback. But the springs are not stiff enough to require excessive force to swing back.

And the kickback stance is slightly longer than the FirePit, with separate front legs instead of crossbars running from back to front. This can give a little more stability and freedom to lean forward when getting out of a chair.

By the way, the Kickback seat height is 17.1 inches. I am 6’2 “and my wife 5’5” but it was easy for both of us to get up and down from the chair.

And this despite the fact that GCI claims that it is the most compact of the Rocker chairs. Of course, the Kickback folds smaller and lighter than the FirePit, which requires the seat to be raised by the sides.

Even then, it only folds in half. The kickback breaks like many camping chairs up and down, making it easier to carry and store.

Relatively compact aside, this is not a travel chair. (If that’s what you want, take a look here.) Its massive, powder-coated steel frame contributes to its weight, which is 10 pounds north.

And the long back legs require a large, flat surface to slap the Kickback onto to keep the chair from swaying. Keep this for road trips, backyard nights around a campfire pit, and watching sports games from the side.

Another thing we would love about a chair made for more moderate activities: some padding. (We also tested the Max Relax Pod Rocker, which has a bit of cushioning in the body, but we didn’t care about the lack of armrests.

GCI, if you’re listening, we wouldn’t mind that Softness in the Kickback.) That said, the warm fabric of the seat is fine and provided ample support for my 215 lb frame as I reclined.

Plus, it’s easy to sling over your shoulder with the included strap and peg system that keeps the chair folded down as you drag it.

A cup holder and general pocket, a must-have on any chair for your day-to-day activities, round out the Kickback package. What’s more, you don’t have to search very hard to find smaller, less comfortable (albeit more technical) chairs that cost twice the price.

This is why it can be placed Fifth in the row of Best GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker Mesh Chair

Pros

  • Pistons let you recline and rock comfortably
  • Easy to unfold and get in and out of

Cons

  • Heavy
